Zuckerman Spaeder LLP's William J. Murphy Wins 2012 Leadership in Law Award
Zuckerman Spaeder LLP is pleased to announce that The Daily Record has named William J. Murphy a winner of its 2012 Leadership in Law Awards. The Daily Record’s Leadership in Law Awards honor outstanding Maryland attorneys whose dedication to their occupation and to their communities deserves particular recognition. The winners of the Leadership in Law Awards are selected by an outside panel of judges based on career achievement, impact on Maryland, mentoring and community involvement.
In addition to this award, Mr. Murphy has received numerous other legal industry recognitions. In recognizing William J. Murphy in its 2011 edition, Chambers USA quotes a source as saying, “simply brilliant—he understands what perfection is and knows how to achieve it.” In 2012, Best Lawyers named Mr. Murphy as its Baltimore “Lawyer of the Year for Bet-the-Company Litigation.” An experienced trial lawyer, Mr. Murphy has tried to verdict civil and criminal cases in state and federal courts, has represented clients in commercial arbitration, and has argued numerous appeals in many courts around the region. He has represented witnesses and targets of grand jury investigations, defended clients investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other federal enforcement agencies, and represented individuals in congressional investigations—including several attorneys in the Office of the White House Counsel during the Clinton administration. A former U.S. Supreme Court clerk, Mr. Murphy also has represented and consulted with clients in several matters presented to that court.
For the past 20 years, Mr. Murphy has mentored lawyers, helping them develop their skills and experience to become leaders of the bar. In addition to his demanding legal practice, Mr. Murphy has provided exceptional service to the community through his substantial pro bono activities. Most recently, Mr. Murphy was honored by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with the 2011 Daniel M. Gribbon Pro Bono Advocacy Award for his devotion in working on behalf of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Bagram Air Force Base, Afghanistan. After five years of litigation and other advocacy on behalf of a doctor held at Guantanamo Bay, his client was returned to his homeland.
Mr. Murphy will be honored with the Leadership in Law award on November 15, 2012. For more information about The Daily Record’s 2012 Leadership in Law Awards, please click here.
